Nemai Ghosh, one of Indias most revered and loved photographers, has been shooting for more than half a century. His photos of Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak, Utpal Dutt and many others are a crucial archive of Indian cinemas golden era. Later, he extended this work to include art giants like M.F. Husain, S.H. Raza, Jamini Roy and Tyeb Mehta, among others. In A Portrait of the Artist in the World, Ghosh shoots the renowned painter Paresh Maity. Hailing from a small town in West Bengal, Maity fought tremendous odds to chase his dreams. At home in the world, he lets the palette from his surroundings direct his stunning watercolours. He might be a superstar in the art world and a Padma Shri awardee today, but his success was hard won. Ghosh accompanied the indomitable Maity on his travels—from a tempestuous boat ride during Keralas monsoons to welcoming Basanta Utsav with baul singers at Santiniketan, from the medieval canals of Venice to the modern streets of London—training his lens on the artist at work. Writer and art collector Ina Puri, who is intimately familiar with the work of both these artists, contextualises Ghoshs photos and Maitys artwork. A compelling visual chronicle, this book brings together the genius of two formidable virtuosos of our times......
