प्रख्यात कथाशिल्पी फणीश्वरनाथ रेणु ने रिपोर्ताज़ के बारे में अपनी राय इन शब्दों में व्यक्त की है - ‘‘गत महायुद्ध ने चिकित्साशास्त्र के चीर-फाड़ (शल्य-क्रिया) विभाग को पेनसिलिन दिया और साहित्य के कथा-विभाग को रिपोर्ताज़।’’ रेणु का यह कथन हिंदी-साहित्य में रिपोर्ताज़ के आविर्भाव का काल-निर्धारण ही नहीं, उसकी सामाजिक भूमिका को भी रेखांकित करता है। रेणु मानवीय भावनाओं के अप्रतिम चितेरे हैं, लेकिन उनका रचनाकार मन उन सामाजिक, राजनीतिक और प्राकृतिक त्रासदियों को अनदेखा नहीं करता, जो किसी भी भावना-लोक को प्रभावित करती हैं। एक योद्धा रचनाकार के नाते रेणु ने स्वयं ऐसी त्रासदियों का सामना किया था। यही कारण है कि उनके अनेक कथा-रिपोर्ताज़, जिन्होंने हिंदी पत्रकारिता को भी समृद्ध किया, विभिन्न त्रासद स्थितियों का अत्यंत रचनात्मक साक्ष्य प्रस्तुत करते हैं। इतिहास पर अपने निशान छोड़ जानेवाली अनेक घटनाएँ, रचनाकार की विभिन्न भावस्थितियाँ, जीवन-स्थितियाँ और उसके लगाव-सरोकार इस विधा को निश्चय ही एक विशिष्ट ऊँचाई सौंपते हैं। ‘समय की शिला पर’ में रेणु के अब तक उपलब्ध सभी रिपोर्ताज़ संकलित हैं।
